Charlaine Harris is probably best know for writing the Southern Vampire Mysteries (New York Times best seller, and the basis for hit HBO series True Blood). But, Harris isn’t a one trick pony. It’s rumored that another of her series, the Harper Connelly Series, is going to be picked up by CBS.
The series centres around Harper Connelly, a lightening strike survivor who was left with a special skill. She can sense dead people (and not in a Hayley Joel Osment way). She can sense where the bodies of the dead are, and can relive their final moments. Using her special talent, she travels around America with her step-brother Tulliver (get the feeling Harris like’s unusual names?).
The series is well written, with interesting story lines and well plotted mysteries. While not as sexy as the Southern Vampire Mysteries, they are still a good read.
Underpinning this series is the mysterious disappearance of Harper‘s sister. Harper is convinced she’s dead; she just hasn’t found the body yet.
The other key to this series is the relationship between Harper and Tulliver. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that the two are more than just step brother and sister, whose parents haven’t been part of their lives since their sister’s dissappearance.
As their romance develops, Tulliver repeatedly reminds Harper that he is not her brother (um okay, I have a feeling she knows that already). It makes for an interesting read as they both struggle between what they think is right and what they want.
While physically weaker than most heroines, it is these weaknesses that make Harper such a different heroine. Harper‘s definitely no Sookie Stackhouse, and Tulliver is no Eric Northman. But, there is still something about Harper and Tulliver that makes you want to read their story.
